about
David Bowie- "Golden Years"
What sad, sad news shook us all awake on Monday. It's an understatement to suggest that there is little in the world of popular culture that the late, great David Bowie hasn't influenced, and to let a 'Friday Covers' go by without paying tribute to the great man would be unthinkable.
This is in essence what I said to my dear friend, Chris "Merrick" Hughes on Monday afternoon. He heartily agreed so we decided to collaborate (as we often do) on this recording.
If I'm honest, I had many misgivings-how could I sing Bowie! Which song?! "How ridiculous!" I said, but once again I am so grateful to Chris for helping me overcome considerable self doubt and find a song/angle which we could have some great fun with, whilst staying far enough away from the original to (hopefully) not taint it's genius.
Listen out for classic 'Ants' Tom Tom stylings on verse 2 and an overall 'everybody wants to rule the shuffle' vibe throughout! Thanks a million, mate.x
Also, to super 6 string twanger extraordinaire, David Rhodes who came in on Tuesday and sprayed s**t all over the track, cheers for that! Anything that sounds too difficult for me to play was played by him. xx
lyrics
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Don't let me hear you say life's taking you nowhere, angel
Come get up my baby
Look at that sky, life's begun
Nights are warm and the days are young
Come get up my baby
There's my baby, lost that's all
Once I'm begging you save her little soul
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Come get up my baby
Last night they loved you, opening doors and pulling some strings, angel
Come get up my baby
In walked luck and you looked in time
Never look back, walk tall, act fine
Come get up my baby
I'll stick with you baby for a thousand years
Nothing's gonna touch you in these golden years, gold
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Come get up my baby
Some of these days, and it won't be long
Gonna drive back down where you once belonged
In the back of a dream car twenty foot long
Don't cry my sweet, don't break my heart
Doing all right, but you gotta get smart
Wish upon, wish upon, day upon day, I believe oh Lord
I believe all the way
Come get up my baby
There's my baby, lost that's all
Once I'm begging you save her little soul
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Come get up my baby
Don't let me hear you say life's taking you nowhere, angel
Come get up my baby
Run for the shadows, run for the shadows
Run for the shadows in these golden years
I'll stick with you baby for a thousand years
Nothing's gonna touch you in these golden years, gold
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
